Finger Food Fridays

I’m basically a waste of flesh on Friday evenings after a long week of work. As my husband Christian will attest, I come home seeking a nice glass of wine, a simple dinner, and a cozy snooze on the couch while he watches a movie I don’t care to see.

It would be easy to order a pizza or go for takeout on a night like this. But we’ve recently adopted a new Friday night dinner tradition that’s easy, healthy, tasty and a whole lot of fun. We call it “Finger Food Fridays.”

Here’s how it goes: 

  • I dig around in the fridge for fruits, veggies, cheese, hummus…basically anything that doesn’t require much prep.
  • We cook up a couple of sausages or chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces.
  • I lay out a picnic-style spread on our coffee table, and we have ourselves a feast!

Finger Food Fridays are pretty awesome for a number of reasons. Most notably, the kids love the irreverence of the meal. We leave the silverware in the drawer and eschew our typical table manners. It’s amazing how excited our boys get when we let them eat their dinner like a pack of stray dogs. They really go after it and gobble down all kinds of veggies they would normally avoid.

Secondly, Finger Food Fridays help me avoid food waste. I pull out all the little onesie-twosie fruits and veggies that might otherwise be left to spoil in the fridge. Just chop them up into bite-sized pieces, and they make a perfectly lovely meal.

If you’d like to adopt Finger Food Fridays (or Thursdays or Wednesdays) at your house, try some of these fixin’s:

Protein:

  • Sausages from The Local Pig (we keep them handy in the freezer)
  • Cubed chicken breast cooked in a little olive oil, low-sodium soy sauce and garlic
  • Lunch meat sliced into 1-inch strips, rolled up and eaten cold
  • Raw almonds, pecans or any other nut you fancy
  • Sliced cheese—cheddar, pepper jack, provolone…whatever you have on hand

Fruits and Veggies:

  • Sliced apples, pears, kiwi, oranges and strawberries
  • Blueberries and grapes
  • Carrot and celery sticks
  • Sugar snap or snow peas
  • Chopped broccoli and cauliflower
  • Sliced bell peppers (the more colorful, the better)

Dips and Such:

  • Hummus and pita chips
  • Peanut or almond butter
  • Greek yogurt with a little parsley, garlic powder, onion powder and dill weed mixed in
  • Olive oil with minced garlic and parmesan cheese, paired with cubed bread for dipping

As you can see, pretty much anything goes for Finger Food Fridays. The point is to keep it super simple. Grab whatever’s handy in your fridge and pantry, spread it out on a few plates, and enjoy a little non-traditional dining with your family. Giggles and merry conversation are sure to follow.
